I just gave my cat 1 mg of Xanax. she's staggering around in circles

lol nope, I already have two. I think getting a cat would be a lot more inconvenient than finding these on the street. But since I already have them why not?

Erm, do you mind me asking what happened with your cat and mescaline?

...In cats, however, the side effects tend to be an increase in affection, strange behavior, irritability, and possibly even an increase in depression. If you think your pet might be experiencing any of these side effects, contact your vet immediay.

She did try and jump on a small table that's her usual perch and missed and hit her neck. :( Don't think it hurt her though. She did it again later when I was too far away to stop her but I managed to catch her before she hit the floor. After about three hours she was well enough that she managed to jump on the table successfully, though she did fall off a few minutes later by stepping off the edge unintentionally. Landed on her feet, staggered sideways, and fell over. We watched her for about three and a half hours, by then we were pretty sure she was going to be okay and wouldn't hurt herself, we both had to leave for different things but she's still fine. Perking up a bit but still loopy and unsteady. Don't think she's slept much if at all though, which is kinda weird for her even without the xanax.

I had pure powdered alprazolam. So I had to use a tiny milligram scale to measure doses (0.5-2.0mg). The actual pills come with tons of binders and fillers that make each pill weigh like 50mg each. I've seen people OD on xanax, luckily every single one of them was fine within 6 hours. Usually it just makes people black out and sleep.

I have xanaxed my cats befor but. 125-.25mg is more than sufficient. However 1mg will not kill your cat it is just not super liver friendly. shit my cat got into mescaline hcl very accidentally one time and I truly believe 1mg of xanax helped save his life.

Aside from being disoriented though, she's doing fine and seems happy.

It wasn't irrelevant at all, he was clarifying that it IS in fact possible to overdose on benzos. It was relevant because saying.

great response :D cant figure out anything witty to say.

Can you explain/describe what you mean by 'fountain'? It sounds like it could be awesome. Perhaps i'd like my cat to have a fountain.

Annon201 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 year ago (0 children).

IIRC Amphetamines are generally cut with glucose, so it probably overpowers the chemical taste and makes it bearable for the animal to eat.

She seems awake and sort of alert, but she's staggering around in circles and seems like she's drunk. First thing we noticed was when she jumped off the table after eating her breakfast (all of it, instead of half like usual) she fell over. Then proceeded to finish the other cat's breakfast. Then walked over to him and rubbed up against him, usually she avoids him and hisses and smacks him if he gets too close.

Already did, talked to receptionist, vet hasn't called back yet and it's been half an hour.

see the search faq for details.

why did you even have a litter box if she never used it?

Or death from opiates + benzos.

I would be surprised if cats experienced increased chronic toxicity of any kind. I can't find any mention of it in literature either.

Seicair 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 year ago (0 children).

Make sure she has plenty of water.

GaryBuseyyyy 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 year ago (0 children) Hm, TIL. Thanks!

Alprazolam like other benzodiazepines is rarely associated with serum ALT elevations, and clinically apparent liver injury from alprazolam is extremely rare.

Vet prescribed generic xanax for her, in 1 mg pills. I looked it up and it seems like even for a human that's not a starting dose. I'm hoping it wasn't supposed to be. 1 mg and someone screwed up somewhere.

so THIS is why my cat sits under the bathtub faucet and drink the drips rather than drink out of her bowl.

ramizD 1 point 2 points 3 points 1 year ago (0 children).

It is impossible to overdose on benzos.

My cat ate a Vyvanse once, that I had dropped on the floor without realizing. Apparently they have a taste for Amphetamines and will actively eat them, as opposed to most medications which seem to bitter or otherwise unpleasant for them to voluntarily eat.

My cat got into some LSD and was chasing shit that didn't exist for hours.

If you notice sourcing, unpleasantness or anything else out of place, please use the report button under the offending post.

lordfairhair 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 year ago (0 children) OD on mairjuana?

Edit- cat is fine, thanks for all the replies! She won't be getting that high a dose again.

I was portioning out some DNM Mescaline HCL last year, had to go to the kitchen for some reason and left hte materials unattended. I came back to find my 2 year old cat chewing on/ playing with the bag the mescaline shipped in. Figure there was no way he got an active dose off of what was left in there. An hour or 2 later my cat came up to me meowing very strangely and extremely distressed, an he never meows. He then stated chasing and running from nonexistent things and having slight little spasms. I gave him a xanax and chilled with him all night trying to keep him calm. He has definiy not made a full psychological recovery.

The vet said that could be signs of some kind of trauma in her past, and said an anxiolytic might help. Sure did, about half an hour after we gave it to her she used the litterbox properly.

May lead someone to believe it is okay to take five bars and drink a bottle of wine.

This thing. I read that cats instinctually want to drink from flowing sources, (do yours ever want to drink from the tap when you have it on?) and don't like still water that might be more dangerous to drink in the wild. They've both started drinking a lot more water since we got it.

She's fine now though and no withdrawals so everything worked out alright. Also when she got better everything stopped including the weed so I never forced them on her for funs.

Found out later she spoke to a new employee, not the usual receptionist. Given that the vet never called back, we're assuming the new employee never bothered to l the vet. Kinda pissed.

His tail was puffed up and he was a little overheated, I took him to the vet, they just sedated him and gave him some charcoal to help absorb any that hadn't already been digested.

Benzos are nearly impossible to overdose on.

0 points 1 point 2 points 1 year ago (2 children).

Thanks so much for all the helpful replies and support, we'll ask the vet about a smaller dose, after reading more and reading replies here I'm not sure we even want to give her half a milligram.

Lehcaro 9 points 10 points 11 points 1 year ago * (0 children).

Really worried about her. Is she going to be okay?

Is this true for felines as well? I know it is for humans but I heard this from a vet student friend of mine. Not like it matters as it is best to err on side of caution anyway but good to know.

She will be fine. She will probably fall asleep soon very heavily and wake up later compley ok. Benzos are nearly impossible to overdose on. Since she seemed to react so strongly to it just give her half a pill next time. Also you got xanax for your cat I would take that shit myself lol.

I was giving my cat Butyr-fentanyl and Brotizolam when she broke her leg. In the right dosages of course. Also I mixed in some sugar to the solution so she wouldn't mind the taste but she still didn't like it when I gave them to her. She was never intoxicated though, except maybe a little when I blew weed smoke into her face to help with the pain.

Aristo-Cat 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 year ago (0 children).

Towards a culture of responsible drug use.

just because its not technically an overdose from toxicity doesn't mean you wont die if you eat a shitload of bars.

Well I guess I won't then. I wish your cat all the best.

True, death as a direct consequence of benzos (aka not taking so many you do stupid stuff) is practically unheard off (don't try to prove me wrong... if you have few kg of powder I'm sure it's possible (if nothing else pack it tightly and drop it on your head from high enough)). However if combined with other cns depressants (alcohol, opiates, ghb,... ) the safety margins are much lower and vary from person to person a lot due differences in tolerances, metabolism,... A might be able to drink a bottle of rum and eat a handful of xanax and just get very drunk, B may wake up in the ER from the same combo and C may die. This is why combing benzos and other cns depressants is always advised against (or if you insist at much lower doses of each).

1 year ago (1 child).

you are not thinking of getting cats now are you?

Best wishes to the cat! Sorry to go off-topic, but how exactly did you get your cat a xanax script?

I thought it seemed high from what I knew of its use in humans, but trusted the vet... I should've broken it in half for the first dose to see how she reacted. She's only 11 pounds.

That's awful service... Even if its not an emergency clinic I'd put that client on hold and get a Dr out of a room if necessary.

39 points 40 points 41 points 1 year ago * (16 children).

She'd pee in it only. Also we have another cat who uses it fine.

Just in case anyone is reading this, death from benzos is rare but death from benzos + alcohol is much easier to accomplish.

Once we were sure she was going to be fine eventually, it was kinda funny watching her. We could pick her up and cuddle her cradled on her back and she'd be happy, we've never been able to do that. She seemed really disoriented but not really upset most of the time. She kept walking up to the other cat she usually avoids and he was so fucking confused all morning, it was hilarious. He'd follow her around and watch her from across the room with the most bemused expression. He'd go to attack her like usual, and she wouldn't do anything or she'd just hiss or growl, and he'd stop and be like "wtf is wrong with you, why aren't you hitting me or running??"

although this is true to a degree, it's a dangerous thing to say. od'ing isn't at all impossible like it is for, say, mairjuana or nitrous oxide, so I just want to put this little psa out there: Taking benzos with other drugs is notorious for potentiating the respiratory depression effects and leading to a lethal overdose. In fact for many drugs, most of the overdoses attributed to them are due to mixing the drug with benzos. Alcohol and opioids are notably dangerous to mix with benzos.

ok, 1mg of xanax is enough for a low recreational dose in humans, equivalent to 10 mg valium. usually vets will prescribe between. 125 -. 25 mg/kg orally, so if your cat is about 15 pounds or 7 kilograms that's about a standard dose. Try lowering the dose to. 5 and see how your cat reacts.

I've actually heard that the human stomach is not large enough to hold enough pills to OD on.

Exactly people do not understand this.

Really? My cat won't use her box and she definiy has some sort of anxiety issue.

Why sugar? Cats can't taste sweet flavours.

ImGonnaKickTomorrow 0 points 1 point 2 points 1 year ago (0 children).

You're right, benzos are more toxic to cats than to humans. Human death from benzo overdose (directly from it not from something stupid you do while high) = practically impossible, for cats they aren't nearly as safe. Idk how toxic alprazolam is compared to the others.

They really are to impossible to overdose on alone though. People get on here talking about how they took 100mg+ of kpens or xanax and didn't die.

She's been drinking a ton of water all day, going over to her fountain 3-6 times an hour.

Dildo_Gaggins 11 points 12 points 13 points 1 year ago (0 children).

I'm definiy getting one of these.

Also take a look at the /r/Drugs FAQs and the psychedelics FAQs below. Erowid's psychedelics FAQ /r/Drugs' psychedelics FAQ.

They really only get dangerous when you mix it with booze, opiates, or any other hardcore "downer". As far as humans go... my cat doesn't do Xanax, but he did eat a cap once.

She had some behavioral issues, she hasn't pooped in her litterbox since we got her as an adult cat. (Several years.) It used to be near the litterbox, but recently it's been upstairs. Our other cat would jump on her when she went down there so she'd come up here and do it.
